Shelter Island Home 'A Total Loss' After Raging Fire: Police

One firefighter was injured, police say.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A Shelter Island home was completely destroyed by fire Thursday, officials said.

According to the Shelter Island Police Department, the fire broke out at about 3:34 p.m. at the home, located on Smith Street.

The Shelter Island Fire Department, town police, and EMS responded to the blaze. Upon arrival, first responders said that the two occupants of the residents were not inside the home at the time, while an active fire was ongoing within the structure, police said.

The Shelter Island Fire Department, with assistance from the Greenport and Orient Fire Departments, brought the fire under control — but, despite suppression efforts, the house sustained extensive damage and was ultimately classified as a "total loss," police said.

One firefighter was treated by EMS at the scene and transported to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital for further evaluation, police said. The firefighter was later released and no additional injuries were reported, police said.

The Shelter Island Fire Department, in conjunction with the Shelter Island Town building department and town fire marshal, is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire, police said. At this time, the incident has been classified as non-criminal in nature, police said.
