SOUTHOLD, NY — The Southold Town Police Department is set to host its annual "National Night Out", an evening dedicated to building stronger partnerships between law enforcement "and the residents we proudly serve," police said.

The event takes place on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Tasker Park, located on Peconic Lane in Peconic.

"National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity for the public to get to know the people who serve their community, learn about public safety, and spend an evening with neighbors in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere," police said.

According to the National Night Out website: "National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live."

The site continues: "National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances."

Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August — while Texas and select areas celebrate on the first Tuesday in October, the organization said.

Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much more.
