GREENPORT, NY — One of the most fun and unique races on the East End drew a spirited crowd Saturday as the 7th Annual North Fork Waiter Race kicked off in Greenport.
Participants from local eateries had to reach the finish line by walking as fast as possible while balancing filled stemmed glasses on serving trays.
Racing carefully into first place was Sianna Renee, or "CC" of Crazy Beans, with James Mullane of Claudio's coming in second, and Jade Torres, also of Claudio's, in third place.

"As the owner of a health food market since 1987, I believe we can all be our 'best' through good nutrition and regular exercise," organizer Shelley Scoggin, owner of The Market, which is celebrating 30 years, has said in past years. "I invite everyone to get involved. The event is fun for both participants and spectators. We are very fortunate to have ELIH at the heart of our community, providing top-rated care."

The first Waiter Race was held in Paris in 1905, the same year ELIH was founded, said ELIH volunteer Peter Clarke, who welcomed participants and thanked event sponsors and teams.
Originally created to cast a positive light on waiters who were thought to be rude or slow, the concept has grown in popularity since its early beginnings, with waiter races now held in more than 63 countries all over the world, he said.
The monitored race began at the ELIH Opportunity Shop on Main Street, headed to Claudio's, and ended in front of The Market.
Those participating enjoyed the fun for a good cause. "What an honor for Peconic Landing to participate in The Great Waiter Race in Greenport. Our dining team shows such integrity and pride 365 days a year. For them to take their personal time to commit to this fundraiser is just joyous," said Bill Bjornhold, director of dining services at Peconic Landing.
