Still No Home For Lonely Dog, Gio, Who Is 'Failing' At Shelter

Gio, who found himself back at the animal shelter and then saw his adoption fall through, is in an "emergency situation," and failing.

PECONIC, NY — Gio, a stray dog who won hearts after word spread about his struggle adapting at the animal shelter, is in an "emergency situation" after his much heralded adoption fell through last month.

According to Gabrielle Stroup of the North Fork Animal Welfare League, Gio is in a desperate way. "He's failing here," she said. "Gio does horribly in a shelter situation. It’s just too much for him to handle. Sadly, he is so anxious here it’s just no life for him."

An adoption to his forever human fell apart after a man who was looking to give Gio a home realized he had not checked his apartment complex for breed restrictions and was told he could not take Gio, Stroup said.

"Please, anyone who had expressed interest come by and see him. We really need to help him find a family. The whole staff and all the volunteers thought this was a perfect match for him, and everyone is disappointed — but we will regroup and just push to find him a home," she said.

According to Stroup, Gio came to the shelter from another rescue group after being found as a stray."He was adopted and then sadly ended up back at the shelter when an older dog in the home would not accept him. He is not doing well at the shelter at all," she said. "He just wants a person."

After reading about Gio's plight in Patch, the public opened their hearts and not even two days later, Gio found someone who said he was initially willing to give him a forever home.

Now, however, Gio finds himself still at the shelter, waiting sadly. "He will be a great dog for someone," Stroup said. "He loves the car."

Gio, she said, could share his home with a medium to large sized female dog. "If someone would just give him a chance , they will have the most thankful, loyal friend for life."
