Storm Slams Town, Leaving Roads Impassable, Driving Treacherous

"It's still a mess out there. Even Main Road is too dangerous to drive on." Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell. See photos here.

SOUTHOLD, NY — Despite a seemingly slow start to a predicted winter storm Wednesday, with most of the day just rainy, Mother Nature slammed the North Fork toward evening, leaving roads flooded, impassable, and treacherous to navigate.

"The storm started slow then came on fast," said Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell. "The high tides have made some roads impassable."

As temperatures dropped, afternoon rains turned into snow, with "things starting to go bad" around 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Russell said, leaving roads very dangerous, with rain on the roads freezing under the snow. There was some lightning reported around town at 5:30 p.m., he added.

Eugene's Creek rose up with the tide and flooded Skunk Lane, leaving a dock submerged under the water, Russell said.

"It's still a mess out there," the supervisor said. "Even the Main Road is too dangerous to drive on."
