Structure Fire Reported On Shelter Island: Police

The fire broke out in a shed, police say.

SHELTER ISLAND, NY — A fire broke out in a shed on Shelter Island Monday afternoon, police said.

Shelter Island police said they and the Shelter Island Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire on South Ferry Road at 1:13 p.m. No one was inside the 20-foot by 30-foot structure, which housed equipment, police said.

The homeowner said he had been burning logs in an outdoor fireplace unit and had left the fire unattended, police said. The Shelter Island Fire Department rapidly extinguished the fire without incident, police said.

After an investigation, police said embers from the fire in the outdoor fireplace, which traveled to the shed in the light-to-moderate wind conditions, could not be eliminated as the cause of the incident, police said.

The fire was deemed accidental and non-criminal and the case closed, police said.
