Three Boaters Rescued After Boat Hits Sandbar on Robins Island

Two of the boaters were hospitalized for hypothermia, police say.

Three boaters were rescued after their boat hit a sandbar on Robins Island on Sunday night, according to Southold Town Police.

Police along with members of the Cutchogue and Mattituck fire departments responded to a report of boaters in distress at about 8:38 p.m.

Southold resident Joshua Haggerty, 33, was operating a 20-foot center console boat through the Peconic Bay when it ran aground on the island, police said.

Haggerty and the two other boaters; 25-year-old Gina Bruswitz, of Riverhead, and 29-year-old Anthony Ellis, of Mattituck, were stranded for several hours and reported that they were suffering from hypothermia, police said.

Cutchogue and Mattituck fire department members responded to the New Suffolk boat ramp and launched their rescue boats.

The Cutchogue Fire Department retrieved Bruswitz and Ellis while the Mattituck Fire Department retrieved Haggerty, police said.

All three were safely transported back the New Suffolk boat ramp.

Bruswitz and Ellis were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of hypothermia, police said.

Haggerty refused medical attention.
