NORTH FORK, NY — With winds picking up and residents beginning to lose power — and Suffolk County under a tropical storm warning Tuesday — Southold Town is braced for the worst.

The town's emergency management team has been in preparation for a few days and is monitoring the storm, Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said, adding that the town's emergency management operations center will be activated at 2 p.m.

"We have lined up added personnel to respond in the field, if necessary, and have staff on standby if we need to open the Peconic School as a shelter," Russell said.
