'Violent' Southold School Shooting Threat Deemed 'Scam': Police

The incident, which took place last week, has been deemed a scam that's happened at other districts, as well, police say.

SOUTHOLD, NY — A threat made on social media against Southold Junior-Senior High School has been deemed a scam, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, on March 21 at 11:40 p.m., a male teenager from Colorado contacted authorities and claimed to have knowledge of a "potential communicated threat to engage in a school shooting" at the school.

The teen claimed to have been using Omegle.com — a site that describes itself as a great way to meet new friends while social distancing — when an unknown person joined him in a video chat and posted a "violent threat" toward members of Southold Junior-Senior High School, police said.

Later, a second call came in from a 21-year-old in Ontario, Canada, who told police he had seen the same threat on Omegle.com., authorities said.

Police investigated and said that the incident was "similar in nature to other reported threats and has been determined to be a scam," authorities said.

Attempts to reach Omegle.com were immediately unsuccessful.
