Watch Porter Basketball Live In New Greenport Broadcasts

The next broadcast in Greenport will feature the dedication of Coach Al Court, in honor of Porter Coach Al Edwards.

GREENPORT, NY — Sports enthusiasts can now watch Porters make Greenport proud from anywhere in the world.

Whether on a laptop or smartphone, the games, for the first time, are now offered live, thanks to a new initiative by GPO TV and Greenport Schools' Porters' basketball, according to the district.

Recently, district officials said, it was "an historic moment in high school sports on the North Fork" as a first ever live broadcast of the Greenport Porters vs. the Stony Brook Bears was aired on December 13.

Southold Town Assessor Kevin Webster announced the play-by-play; Webster has a background in broadcasting, the district said.

Students in the GPO TV program handled the camera, provided technical support and assisted with other aspects of the live broadcast, gaining invaluable experience in the process, a release said.

“We’ve talked about this possibility for several years and it’s great to see it happening,” Webster said.

Greenport Schools Athletic Director Chris Golden was pleased to offer the opportunity to many who might find themselves unable to attend the games in person. “This opens up many, many opportunities for alumni and others associated with high school athletics to be able to stay in touch with Greenport," he said.

The game was broadcast using the Vimeo Live platform. To watch that game now, click here.

And that's not all: The next live broadcast is coming soon on Wednesday, December 20 at 6 p.m. when the Porters take on Mattituck.

The night will include the dedication of Coach Al Court, in honor of Porter Coach Al Edwards, district officials said.

"During his high school career at Greenport Al Edwards scored 2,117 points. He was recognized as a New York Daily News All American and became coach of the Porters in 1979. During his tenure as coach for 34 years the Porters won 383 games, 12 league championships and 10 Suffolk County titles. Coach Edwards was among those in the first class inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame. His name was synonymous with Greenport basketball," the district said.

Dozens of alumni are expected to attend that special dedication, which will again be recorded as part of the live broadcast, so Porters fans far and wide can tune in either live, or watch the event after the game.

"I think it's great that the students and staff of GPO TV at Greenport Schools are launching a live broadcast of high school sporting events to bring the experience directly to alumni and community members," said Greenport Schools Superintendent David Gamberg.
