Woman Airlifted After Crash With Sanitation Truck On North Fork: PD

The Riverhead woman hit the truck then careened off the roadway and struck a building, police say.

MATTITUCK, NY — A Riverhead woman was airlifted with serious injuries after crashing into a sanitation truck in Mattituck on Wednesday, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the crash took place at 7:21 a.m. on Old Sound Avenue. Southold police, along with both the Mattituck and Cutchogue Fire Departments, responded to the scene. Paola Moore, 41, of Riverhead, was heading east and hit the rear of a sanitation truck driven by Scott Keyser, 63, of Flanders, police said.

Keyser had been attempting to back his vehicle out of a private driveway when the collision occurred, police said.

After Moore hit the sanitation truck, she drove off of the roadway and struck a building on the north side of the roadway, police said.

Moore was treated at the scene and then transported to Stony Brook University Hospital by Suffolk County Police Aviation; Keyser was not injured, police said.

The Suffolk County Police Department's motor carrier safety unit responded to the scene to inspect the garbage truck; the truck was released to the owner, police said.

The crash is being investigated by the Southold Town Police Department's detective division and has been deemed non-criminal, with no charges filed, police said.
