Woman Who Led Police On Chase Was Intoxicated: Cops

Multiple police cars were involved in the chase, officials say.

ORIENT, NY — A Brooklyn woman was arrested after she led officers on a chase in Orient while intoxicated, police said.

According to Southold Town Police, the incident took place Monday at 12:15 p.m. on Orient State Parkway. Southold Police received a call regarding a disturbance at Orient State Park; Tracey Bernitt, 52, left Orient State Park and an officer located her vehicle heading west on New York State Route 25 in Orient, police said.

An officer tried to get her to stop by putting on lights and sirens, but Bernitt failed to comply and a pursuit ensued involving multiple marked police vehicles, police said.

The pursuit was terminated by supervisors for public safety reasons; Bernitt's vehicle was located a short time later and she was interviewed and found to be intoxicated, police said.

Bernitt was arrested, charged with driving while intoxicated, first offense; a traffic device violation; and failure to obey a police officer, police said.

She was transported to police headquarters, processed, and later arraigned at Southold Justice Court, police said.
