Woman's 2nd Job Brings Self-Worth: 'I Am In Charge Of My Own Paycheck'

NORTH FORK, NY — It began with the desire to earn a little extra money — and has blossomed into a life-affirming experience for Valerie DeFio, who said her side gig as an independent consultant for Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski has become a deeply meaningful venture.

DeFio began her journey with Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski on August 1, 2015; the business is based out of her home in Mattituck.

The entrepreneurial arm of Swarovski affords DeFio and other women not just the chance to purchase "high-quality fashion jewelry," but also, to get friends together for a "fun, sparkle play daydate and earn free and heavily discounted jewels." Third, it gives people "opportunity to to own your own small business on your terms," she said, with consultants working on commission.

As an independent contractor, DeFio said she feels that she owns a piece of, and is deeply proud of, Swarovski, a "red carpet powerhouse" in the fashion industry.

To sell the jewelry, DeFio said she hosts events that she enjoys, such as "Fun Java 'N Jewels," "Sip 'N Sparkle," or "Cupcakes and Crystals."

"That's the best scenario, but anyone can purchase from me, anytime," she added.

DeFio has also been involved with giving back to the community through fundraisers on the North Fork for local causes, including churches and the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

Although she's about to start her 28th year working at the transfer station in Southold Town, the second job has given her the chance to take the reins in her own life.

"I love this business because I am in charge of my own paycheck," she said. "I can earn, go on vacation, and work around my life and personal schedule."

And, in a few years when she retires from her day job, she said: "I can put more effort into my sparkle side gig, if I want to."

For other women thinking of trying a second job such as hers, DeFio said it's worth taking the first step. "You can do your business your way. You can work when you want. What started out as a side hustle became deeply personal, she said. "I got into this business for some extra money, but I have experienced so much more. I have experienced tremendous personal growth. I have so much more self-esteem. I have conquered my fear of public speaking. I have a huge network of sparkle sisters I am proud to call my friends."

There are goals to meet that she revels in, DeFio said, including selling a certain amount to participate in a national incentive trip.

"I'm earning money for my family, but at the same time I am earning a trip to Nashville in May with my sparkle sisters," she said.

She added: "I really love what I do."
