Wrong-Way Driver Charged With DWI On East End: Police

He was driving west in the eastbound lane, police say.

CUTCHOGUE, NY — A wrong-way driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a crash in Cutchogue Thursday, police said.

Alexander Chervenak, 36, of West Babylon, was arrested at 8:16 p.m. on Route 48 and charged with driving while intoxicated, first offense; aggravated DWI, no prior; resisting arrest; and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, Southold Town police said.

Southold Town police said they responded to reports of a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lane of Route 48 in Peconic; an additional report was received of a crash involving the wrong-way driver, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said. Chervenak continued to travel west in the eastbound lane and was located and stopped by responding officers near Depot Lane in Cutchogue, police said.

Chervenak was found to be intoxicated, placed under arrest, transported to Southold Town police headquarters, processed and held for arraignment, police said.
