3 Young Boys Rescued From Canoe in Northport Waters

The canoe got blown off course from the heavy winds and 2-foot waves on Monday evening.

Three young boys from Huntington Station were rescued by Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers after their canoe got blown off course in Northport waters and they were unable to paddle back to shore on Monday evening.

Davin Miles, 12, his brother Kenyon Miles, 10, and their friend Chris Gurr, 12, launched their canoe from Crab Meadow Beach to go fishing in the Long Island Sound when they paddled out away from the protection of the shoreline.

Police said the canoe was blown about 1.5 miles offshore after the wind began to increase at 6:43 p.m.

Marine Bureau Police Officers on routine patrol discovered the three children in the canoe and determined the boys could not paddle back to shore against the 15-20 miles per hour winds and the 2-foot waves, police said.

The boys were brought aboard police patrol boat Marine Bravo and were taken to shore. The boys’ parents were waiting for them when they returned to Crab Meadow Beach, police said.

The three children were wearing flotation devices and were uninjured from the incident, police said.

The Marine Bureau reminds boaters to always wear a personal flotation device, keep a close eye on the weather forecast and be cautious of offshore winds, which can blow small paddle craft and inflatable boats offshore very quickly.
