EAST NORTHPORT, NY — An 18-year-old East Northport man has been indicted on a murder charge in the killing of his grandmother’s fiancé, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said Thursday.

Noel Bermudez-Chin was indicted on one count of second-degree murder, the DA said. Prosecutors said he poured a boiling mixture of oil and water onto 61-year-old Joseph Falvo while Falvo was sleeping, then stabbed him multiple times, causing his death.

According to prosecutors, Falvo and his fiancée had been staying in a trailer on an East Northport property after a fire damaged their home in December 2025. Bermudez-Chin, who is the fiancée’s grandson, had started staying with the couple in the trailer, the DA’s office said.

According to the DA's office, Bermudez-Chin had lived with his grandmother in the past; however, after the fire, he left to live with his father until he moved back in again.

Police said the attack happened on Sunday, March 29, at about 3:45 a.m.

Bermudez-Chin was dropped off at the trailer home the previous Friday to live with his grandmother again, the DA's office said.

Prosecutors said Bermudez-Chin boiled oil and water in a pot, then threw the mixture at Falvo as he slept on a couch inside the trailer. He then stabbed Falvo numerous times around his body before fleeing, according to the investigation.

While fleeing, Bermudez-Chin called 911 to report the incident himself, prosecutors said.

Suffolk County police officers responded and found Falvo unresponsive inside the trailer, according to the DA’s office. Investigators said he had suffered multiple stab wounds to his back, head, neck, and stomach, along with burns to his chest.

Falvo was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he died from his injuries, prosecutors said.

Bermudez-Chin was arrested a short time later, and authorities said he had what appeared to be blood on his hands and clothing. Police also recovered a knife with what appeared to be blood on the blade and a pot with what appeared to be oil residue from inside the trailer, according to prosecutors.

On Thursday, April 16, Bermudez-Chin was arraigned before Acting Supreme Court Justice John Collins on the indictment. Collins ordered that he be held without bail while the case is pending, the DA’s office said.

He is scheduled to return to court on May 5. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison, prosecutors said.

Bermudez-Chin is represented by Peter Mayer, who was not immediately available to respond to a request for comment on the charges.

“The defendant allegedly boiled oil and water and used it as a weapon against a sleeping man before stabbing him repeatedly,” Tierney said. “There is no place in Suffolk County for such deliberate, premeditated violence.”
