NORTHPORT, NY — Whitney and Wylie, bonded siblings born around May 1, 2025, are Northport Cat Rescue Association’s Kittens of the Week.
Volunteers say their story is one many people can relate to.
“Have you ever walked into a room full of people you didn’t know?” the rescue said. “Maybe a wedding where you only knew one person, sitting at a table with strangers, feeling unsure, a little anxious — maybe even wanting to disappear. That’s exactly how Whitney and Wylie feel.”
The pair arrived in rescue scared and unsure of their surroundings.
“They came to us confused,” the rescue said. “But it didn’t take long to realize they simply needed time, patience, and understanding.”
In foster care, their personalities slowly began to emerge.
“Beneath their shyness are sweet, playful, deeply loving souls,” the rescue said.
Wylie, volunteers say, has already shown his playful side.
“He has the cutest little quirk — he’ll do a somersault while getting pets,” the rescue said.
Both kittens enjoy quiet moments together.
“They love watching the world from the window, snuggling together, playing, and soaking in affection,” the rescue said.
Whitney, while shy at first, shows affection once she feels secure.
“Once she feels safe, she’ll circle you, purring softly, asking for love,” the rescue said. “When you lie down, she’ll rest her head on your leg, roll onto her belly, and show you her whole heart.”
But like many shy animals, that side of them takes time.
“Only when they feel safe,” the rescue emphasized.
At a recent adoption event, volunteers say the pair were overlooked.
“Not a single person stopped to look into their habitat,” the rescue said. “They didn’t run up to anyone — they hung back, unsure.”
Volunteers say they had hoped someone would see past that moment.
“We were hoping someone would be willing to give them the time they need,” the rescue said. “If you are that person, you will be rewarded tenfold.”
The rescue said building trust with shy animals can be especially meaningful.
“There is nothing more incredible than earning the trust of a shy, scared kitty,” the rescue said. “One day, you’re greeted at the door by the same little souls who once hid away — now asking for your love.”
Whitney and Wylie are currently available for adoption at Petco in Huntington.
“They just need someone willing to give them a chance,” the rescue said. “Please share with anyone who could be their hero — especially the shy ones.”
Whitney and Wylie are spayed and neutered, fully vaccinated, litter box–trained, microchipped, and FELV/FIV negative. Those interested in meeting the pair can visit the Northport Cat Rescue website to fill out an application, call 631-606-2631, or email info@northportcatrescue.org
