NORTHPORT, NY — Kevin, an 8-year-old cat described as a gentle soul looking for a second chance, is Northport Cat Rescue Association’s Cat of the Week.
“Sometimes the sweetest cats have the saddest stories,” the rescue said.
Kevin was surrendered when his family was forced to move, according to NCRA. His family exhausted every option to keep him, but circumstances beyond their control left them with no choice, the rescue said.
While Kevin was deeply loved, saying goodbye was devastating for everyone involved.
“Despite losing the only home he had ever known, Kevin continues to show nothing but love,” NCRA said.
Volunteers describe Kevin as a cat who “hit the jackpot” in personality. He is calm, affectionate and easygoing, according to the rescue.
Kevin spent the last year living with a newborn child and was consistently gentle, patient and loving, NCRA said. Volunteers say he enjoys people and would make a wonderful companion for a family looking for a relaxed, affectionate cat.
Kevin is not a fan of dogs, but he does well with other cats.
Since arriving at Northport Cat Rescue Association’s rescue cottage, Kevin has earned the nickname “the Welcome Wagon.”
The rescue said Kevin instinctively comforts frightened kittens and helps nervous adult cats adjust to their new surroundings.
His quiet confidence has also helped another rescue cat, Wiley, come out of his shell, according to NCRA. Wiley, who previously spent much of his time hiding, now seeks Kevin out for companionship and can often be found curled up beside him.
“Their friendship has been heartwarming to watch,” NCRA said, adding that the rescue would love to see Kevin and Wiley adopted together.
Although Kevin has adapted well, volunteers say there is still sadness in his eyes.
“It’s clear he misses the home where he was loved, and being surrendered has been confusing and traumatic for him,” the rescue said.
Like many surrendered pets, Kevin did not do anything wrong, NCRA said. He simply became the victim of unfortunate circumstances.
The hope now is that Kevin will find a forever family who will give him the stability, love and security he deserves.
“With a little patience and a lot of love, there’s no doubt he’ll reward his new family with endless affection,” the rescue said.
NCRA said seeing beloved family pets surrendered is one of the hardest parts of rescue work. But watching those same animals find new homes where they can thrive makes the difficult days worthwhile.
Kevin and Wiley are neutered, fully vaccinated, litter box trained, microchipped, and have tested negative for both FeLV and FIV.
Those interested in meeting Kevin and his friends can complete an adoption application through the Northport Cat Rescue Association website. For more information, contact NCRA at 631-606-2631 or email info@northportcatrescue.org.
