Blue Moon Still Waiting For Forever Family: Northport Kitty Of The Week

NORTHPORT, NY — Moon, a 1-year-old black cat whose long wait has earned her the nickname "Blue Moon," is Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cat of the Week.

The rescue said it is hoping that this time, Moon's forever family is reading.

"Her name is actually Moon, but this beautiful one-year-old girl has been waiting so patiently for someone special to come along that 'Blue Moon' somehow feels fitting," NCRA said.

Moon came to Northport Cat Rescue Association in an unusual way.

Volunteers were helping search for a missing black cat when they came across another little black cat outside, the rescue said. She was not the cat they were looking for, but the friendly young cat clearly needed someone to find her, too.

"And that is how Moon found her way to us," NCRA said.

It did not take long for volunteers to fall in love with her.

With her sleek black coat, golden eyes and affectionate personality, Moon is "a sweetheart through and through," the rescue said.

She loves being petted, gives gentle head-butts, enjoys snuggling and can happily entertain herself chasing toy mice.

Moon has also shown what a family cat she can be, NCRA said. In foster care, she lived happily with other cats and kittens, a dog and a young child.

But when Moon moved into one of the rescue's store adoption habitats, something changed.

"The confinement, noise and constant activity simply weren't for her," NCRA said.

As the weeks passed, the rescue said its happy, social cat began showing signs of stress. Volunteers brought Moon back into foster care so she could relax, stretch her legs and be herself again.

"And there she waits," NCRA said.

The rescue said Moon has been featured before and is being featured again because sometimes the right person has not seen the right cat yet.

"Maybe this time, Moon's person is reading," NCRA said.

Moon does not need anything extraordinary, volunteers said. She needs a home where she can play, cuddle, follow her people around and know she belongs.

"She has so much love to give," the rescue said. "She just needs someone willing to give her the chance."

NCRA hopes Moon's wait will soon come to an end.

"After all, once in a blue moon, dreams really do come true," the rescue said. "Maybe this time, it will be Moon's."

Moon is spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, litter box trained and has tested negative for both FeLV and FIV.
