NORTHPORT, NY — More than 1,600 Northport High School students and staff gathered Friday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The school community assembled in the Commons for a schoolwide moment of silence and remembrance, according to the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District. The Northport High School Choir performed the National Anthem as students and staff gathered.
Students and staff quietly walked from their classrooms to the Commons as part of the commemoration. School musical groups also performed during the ceremony.
Elise Autz, a retired Northport High School security guard and NYPD officer, spoke to students about the lasting impact the events of Sept. 11, 2001, had on her life.
The ceremony concluded with students planting American flags outside the school behind the Freedom Fountain.
The district said it installed the fountain in 2002 as a tribute to the victims of the attacks and their families.
The observance allowed students and staff to remember those who died and reflect on the impact of Sept. 11, according to the district.
