NORTHPORT, NY — Chick and Fillet are two 5-month-old bonded brothers who offer what Northport Cat Rescue Association calls the perfect combination of "a little ruckus" and calm companionship.
The pair is Northport Cat Rescue Association's Kittens of the Week. Though they are closely bonded, the brothers have distinct personalities.
Chick, whose striking blue eyes immediately stand out, is the "smushy one" of the pair, according to the rescue.
Once he feels comfortable with someone, Chick loves affection and will happily nuzzle into a person's neck.
Fillet is the braver brother.
"Silly, playful and a little more adventurous," Fillet helps give Chick confidence and appears to take his role as his brother's protector seriously, NCRA said.
Both kittens can initially be shy around new people, but volunteers say their personalities emerge once they realize they are safe.
"Together, they make an incredibly loving pair," the rescue said.
There is also something volunteers have noticed about the brothers. Based on their behavior and physical characteristics, along with some of the other cats and kittens rescued from the same home, NCRA believes Chick and Fillet may display Ragdoll-like traits.
The rescue stressed that their breed has not been confirmed.
Ragdoll cats are commonly associated with relaxed temperaments and a tendency to go loose or "floppy" while being held — something volunteers say Chick and Fillet also do.
"Pick them up, and they have a unique tendency to simply go limp and settle into your arms like little ragdoll toys," NCRA said.
Chick's blue eyes are another physical characteristic volunteers associate with the breed. Still, the rescue said the brothers' exact ancestry remains unknown.
"While their exact breed cannot be confirmed, their sweet, gentle personalities certainly make them special," NCRA said.
Chick and Fillet have previously lived with other cats and could potentially share their new home with feline companions after a slow and proper introduction, according to the rescue.
They would also be happy as the only cats in a household.
"These bonded brothers already have their best friend in each other," NCRA said.
Chick and Fillet are neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped and litter box trained. Both have tested negative for FeLV and FIV.
Now, they need a family willing to give them time to become comfortable in their new surroundings.
"All these beautiful brothers need is a family willing to give them a little time to settle in — and a forever home where they can continue doing what they do best: playing, snuggling and taking care of each other," the rescue said.
Those interested in adopting Chick and Fillet can complete an adoption application through the Northport Cat Rescue Association website. For more information, call 631-606-2631 or email info@northportcatrescue.org.
