NORTHPORT, NY — Nearly eight years ago, Birdie and Dizzie were tiny kittens found curled up together near a dumpster. Northport Cat Rescue Association rescued the bonded siblings, and they were eventually adopted together into what everyone believed would be their forever home.
For nearly eight years, it was. Now, Birdie and Dizzie are starting over.
The two black cats were recently surrendered back to Northport Cat Rescue Association after their family's circumstances changed, the rescue said.
"We want to be clear that they did absolutely nothing wrong," NCRA said. "Sometimes life takes unexpected turns, and unfortunately, our beloved pets can find themselves caught in the middle."
One moment during their surrender has been especially difficult for volunteers to forget.
When Birdie and Dizzie's former owner brought them to their foster home and began walking out the door, both cats ran after him.
It appeared to volunteers as though the siblings could not understand why the person they had known for almost their entire lives was leaving without them.
"It was absolutely heartbreaking," the rescue said.
For the first several days, Birdie and Dizzie were understandably grieving, according to NCRA.
But their foster mother gave them the time, patience and affection they needed. Slowly, the cats began coming out of their shells again.
"They're cuddling, seeking affection, and even starting to play," the rescue said.
Birdie and Dizzie are described as sweet, gentle and affectionate. They were raised around children and are also doing well with the other cats in their foster home, according to NCRA. The rescue said it hopes to find the siblings a permanent home directly from foster care.
Volunteers would prefer not to move them into one of NCRA's public adoption habitats after everything they have already experienced.
"They've already been through so much, and we would love to spare them another difficult transition," the rescue said.
What is not negotiable is if Birdie and Dizzie will stay together.
The siblings were side by side when they were found near a dumpster as kittens. They were adopted together, spent nearly eight years together in the same home and are now adjusting to another major life change together.
"Birdie and Dizzie have spent their entire lives together, and we are determined to keep it that way," NCRA said.
The rescue said the pair is not looking for anything complicated.
"They aren't asking for much," volunteers said. "Just a warm home, someone to love, and the promise that this time, forever really means forever."
NCRA hopes someone will offer the siblings the same opportunity they received almost eight years ago.
"Eight years ago, someone gave two frightened kittens curled up beside a dumpster a chance at a beautiful life," the rescue said. "Now, we're hoping someone will open their heart and give them that chance again."
Birdie and Dizzie are spayed and neutered, up to date on vaccinations, litter box trained and microchipped. Both have tested negative for FeLV and FIV. Those interested in meeting the pair can complete an adoption application through the Northport Cat Rescue Association website and indicate they would like to meet Birdie and Dizzie. People can also call 631-606-2631 or email info@northportcatrescue.org.
NCRA will also hold an adoption event Sunday, Oct. 18, from noon to 3 p.m. at Pet Supplies Plus in East Northport.
Several kittens will be available for adoption at the event, and volunteers will be available to answer questions about Birdie and Dizzie and the rescue's other cats.
For Birdie and Dizzie, the hope is that their next move will finally be their last.
