NORTHPORT, NY — Northport High School unveiled a new Veterans Wall of Honor on Thursday, Nov. 5, bringing together veterans, students, educators, elected officials and community members to celebrate local military service and sacrifice.
The Veterans Wall of Honor, featuring the names and photographs of local veterans, will serve as a permanent tribute to those who served in the armed forces while providing students with a personal connection to military history.
Northport High School Principal Robert Dennis worked with district administrators and community organizations to bring the project to life.
"Today is about more than names on a wall and pictures in a display case," Dennis said. "It is about the lives behind those names, the sacrifices made, the families who served alongside their loved ones, the moments of uncertainty, and the courage it takes to answer the call to serve."
The project received support from several community organizations, including the East Northport Rotary Foundation, Friends of Northport Inc., Hoops of Northport, the Northport-East Northport Kiwanis Charitable Fund and the Rotary Club of Northport Charitable Fund.
Students also participated in the ceremony through Project VETS and the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society. Performances by the Northport High School Chamber Orchestra and choir provided musical tributes during the event.
"For our students, this wall is a reminder that history is not just something we read about in textbooks," Dennis said. "It lives among us. It is reflected in the stories of our neighbors, our family members, our friends, and the members of our Northport-East Northport community who have worn our nation's uniform."
High school and district administrators, Board of Education members, state Sen. Mario Mattera and Suffolk County Legislator Stephanie Bontempi attended the ceremony and official ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Wall of Honor is intended to serve as both an ongoing educational resource and a lasting expression of gratitude, allowing future generations of students to learn about the military service of people within their own community.
Northport High School also plans to expand the tribute with additional veterans in the coming years.
The school will begin accepting names for its 2027 induction class in January. Details about the submission process will be announced at that time.
