Northport Girls' Varsity Swim Team Wins Third Meet of the Season

Northport Girls Varsity Swimming triumphs over Sachem East in a meet full of head-turning races.

This past Monday, October 3, the Northport Girls Varsity Swim Team competed against Sachem East, winning the meet with a total of 99 points to Sachem’s 86. Northport entered two 200 Freestyle relays and two 200 Medley relays; all relays qualified for Counties. Some highlights of the meet included Northport’s Melanie Newton winning the 200 Freestyle event with a time of 2:04.94, Northport’s Kathi Unger winning the 50 Freestyle with a 26.98, and Northport’s sole diver Courtney Canfield accumulating more points than Sachem’s four divers put together!

In the 100 Freestyle event, Northport’s Melanie Newton, Jacqui Neber and Erin Nicolai swept the 1-3-5 spots, respectively. Sam Reilly won the 100 Breastroke event with an incredible time of 1:18.42! But perhaps the most unbelievable event of the meet was the 400 Freestyle relay, in which Northport beat Sachem East’s overall high school record with a time of 3:55.54. Melanie Newton, Kathi Unger, Shanna Haddow and Nicole Papsco each swam 100 yards, with blistering fast splits.

The girls won several of the twelve events; each win added another eight points to Northport’s overall score. The Tigers ran away with the lead in the end, winning the meet by thirteen points! Captains Hailey Modelewski, Krissy Unger and Leigh Heidelberger cheered their swimmers on enthusiastically, as well as succeeding in their own events. It’s a spectacular victory for so early in the season, and hopefully Varsity Swimming will keep up their winning streak!
