Northport Varsity Girls’ Swimming Suffers Loss at the Hands of West Islip
On Friday October 20, Northport Varsity Girls’ Swimming suffered only its third loss of the season against West Islip. Considering the fact that West Islip had almost thrice the number of swimmers as Northport, a ten-point loss isn’t bad! West Islip pulled ahead to win 52-42.
Shanna Haddow took the first major win for Northport in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:08.15. Next, Northport’s Kathi Unger out-touched her competitor to win the 50 Freestyle with a 26.72! Then, Melanie Newton swept the 500 Freestyle, winning by almost a lap and achieving a time of 5:24.68.

Northport Varsity always performs very strongly in the Freestyle relays, and this meet was no exception. Sam Reilly, Shanna Haddow, Haley Modelewski and Kathi Unger won the 200 Freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.30. Then, to conclude the meet, Kathi Unger, Jacqui Neber, Shanna Haddow and Melanie Newton won the 400 Freestyle relay by a mile, triumphing with a time of 4:08.69 and making Counties by almost sixteen seconds!
For a meet that Northport lost, there sure were a lot of thrilling races. Condolences go out to the team. Don’t worry girls, you’ll get ‘em next time!
