Northport Girls' Varsity Swimming Wins First Meet, Loses Second
In the first two meets of the 2012, Northport both wins big and loses by a slim margin.
On September 14th, the Northport High School Girls’ Varsity Swim Team swam in the first meet of the 2012 season against Central Islip. The meet was a clear victory for the girls, with the final score being Northport 93, Central Islip 76. Right from the start, the Tigers shot to the lead: Samantha Reilly, Jacqui Neber, Melanie Newton and Shanna Haddow won the 200 Medley Relay event in a fast time of 2:10.65. Next, Newton and Haddow struck again in the 200 Freestyle event with times of 2:07.18 and 2:08.17, respectively. This blistering winning streak continued in the 50 Freestyle. Samantha Reilly, Erin Nicolai and Avery Ersboll took the first, second and third spots with times of 27.17, 29.13 and 31.09.
Northport’s sole diver Courtney Canfield was victorious in her own event. Immediately following the diving win, Shannon Haddow beat the Central Islip swimmers in the 100 Freestyle with a 1:00.57. The Tigers’ winning streak continued into the 200 Freestyle Relay, where Erin Nicolai, Zoe Greenwood, Avery Ersboll and Julia Slawinski came home with a time of 2:07.63. In the 100 Breastroke event, Samantha Reilly, Jacqui Neber and Olivia Bongiorno swept the first three spots. Coming into the last event, Northport had a clear lead over Central Islip - but without any swimmers in the 400 Freestyle Relay, the girls would automatically lose the meet. Samantha Reilly, Erin Nicolai, Shanna Haddow and Melanie Newton stepped up to the plate and took the event in a quick 4:19.03, solidifying the win for Northport Girls’ Varsity Swimming. Congratulations, girls!
