Youth Sports: Northport/TeamTiger Summer Lacrosse
Recaps of the Team Tiger Summer Travel Lacrosse teams playing in the UMASS Tournament July 7 & 8.
Northport Lax Delivers at UMASS
The Northport Boys lacrosse community descended on the University of
Massachusetts with high expectations. TeamTiger arrived with 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, JV and Varsity Teams, taking two championships, one "undefeated" record (Varsity division did not have playoffs) and some very good records across the board.
- The 4th grade (U11)
team went 6-1, falling only to the eventual "A" division
champs -- an all-star team from Canada. - The 5th (U12) grade team also had a single loss to eventual champion,
Team 91. Also an elite team made of players from around Long Island. - The 6th grade (U13) team went 6-0 and was ultimately crowned
champions. This is the second year in a row that this group came back to
Northport with medals. - The 7th grade (U14) team also took home gold after defeating the
Albany Elite Power in the semi-finals and the New Hampshire Tomahawks in the
finals. - The JV team (U16) went 5-1-1 and lost in the semi-finals to
eventual champ, Checkmate Lacrosse -- another Long Island All-Star team.
- Finally, the TeamTiger Varsity team completed its weekend
with a hard-fought and unblemished record of 6-0. The Varsity Tournament --which is a showcase for college coaches -- does not have playoffs. The good
news here is many college coaches stopped by to congratulate Coach Searing on Northport's impressive play. This should bode well for the many top athletes on the Varsity team hoping to play lacrosse in college.
While not every team took home a championship, the Northport/TeamTiger success is impressive. In this day of "all-star" and "elite" teams, it's often very difficult for town teams to compete with teams made up from the very best players from large geographic areas. In all cases, on all TeamTiger teams, the teams are made up of Northport/East Northport players. This should translate to some very good lacrosse at Northport High School in the coming years.
