St. Baldrick's is Coming!

These events have a wonderful history filled with amazing stories from shavees, donors, volunteers, honorees, and many, many more. It's my mission to share these stories with you.

My name is Nora Nolan. I am a Northport resident and proud St. Baldrick's Foundation volunteer, serving on the Committee for the Northport events since 2006. Northport will once again host two St. Baldrick's Events on March 9 and 10 where heroes of all ages are willing to take it all off for children's cancer research.

These events have a wonderful history filled with amazing stories from shavees, donors, volunteers, honorees, and many, many more. It's my mission to share these stories with you, and I'll start with my own:

In 2003, a girlfriend took me to Napper Tandy’s Pub for this fun head-shaving fundraiser. It was a Thursday night and Napper's was packed. It was St. Baldrick’s Day #2 and it was a blast. I came home and told my husband “you HAVE TO shave next year!” Since he listens to everything I say, he jumped on-board and raised money-- shaving for 2004 & 2005 with friends and co-workers and I had baby number three.

Something about those baby girls of ours brought about a real appreciation for life and made me want to give what I could to contribute to St. Baldrick’s Foundation. As I saw it, I had three driving forces that came together and got me involved:

#1: Children. There’s something about kids getting cancer that’s just wrong. I wanted to help.

#2: In college, I interned at a country radio station and was sent to a conference for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to learn how to fundraise for the Country Cares benefit. The knowledge I gained at that seminar, as well as the impact of the tour of St. Jude’s (witnessing active chemo sessions, seeing isolation treatment rooms, and meeting kids in remission who have amazing spirits!) was something I felt I could contribute to the cause. I wanted to help. And,

#3: I had some nice, long hair that I felt people would pay big bucks for me to take off. I wanted to help.

Oh, I forgot another big reason I’m involved. Baby girl number two couldn’t breathe during her third day here on earth. My husband, Mark, performed CPR and opened her airway, and the first responder to our apartment was John McKenna. He carried my limp infant to the ambulance and she came out fine - so when I found out John runs Northport St. Baldrick’s…I wanted to help!

As I was writing my story today, I received an email in response to my request for stories from our Committee, and here’s what it said: "I was at work when the alarm bells rang for a child choking. I responded as the EMT and met a wonderful family called the Nolan Family. Due to the superior care of the EMT, the child is just as wonderful as her mommy today." There ya go...that's my story.     -Johnny Mac

And so I met John. And his family. I met Jim Mahoney and the Appollos. I was introduced to the Kennys, Donna Borden and family, the Adams family, the Kellys… and so many others who are Northport's St. Baldrick's Family.

Thanks Northport, for the support! Let’s keep working to conquer childhood cancer! www.stbaldricks.org
