Come Donate! Upcoming Northport, East Northport Blood Drives

The Town of Huntington will be holding several upcoming blood drives in the spirit of January being National Blood Donor Month.

One blood drive will be held in January while seven other blood drives throughout the Town will be held in February.

“The winter months are typically the most difficult time of year for blood banks and hospitals. Especially when inclement weather hits, many local blood drives are cancelled or experience low turnout.” Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. said in a press release. “Your donation can help prevent a shortage and save up to 3 lives!”

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. is in need of blood and nearly 41,000 units are used in hospitals each day.

Blood donations are used to treat illnesses such as cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, severe infections and bleeding disorders. While nearly 38 percent of the population is healthy enough to donate, less than 10 percent of people do.

Donors must:

• Be 17 years of age or older (or 16 with parental consent)
• Weigh at least 110 pounds
• Be feeling “in good health” on the day of donation
• Come with a photo ID
• Be prepared to spend 30-45 minutes in the donation process
