EAST NORTHPORT, NY--The Covanta “Solid Waste to Energy” Plant in East Northport is in the midst of scheduled maintenance program, which includes a three-week overhaul of the plant's turbine generator. It's scheduled to end Friday, May 24.

Nearby residents have heard sounds resembling ‘Niagara Falls-level waterfall activity.' The Town of Huntington stated what they're hearing is the discharged steam from three boilers bypassing the turbine generator, and the plant is functioning normally.

Venting of steam directly to the air-cooled condenser as it bypasses the turbine generator is what's causing the increased noise. The Town says noise levels are being monitored and are in compliance with local ordinances. The turbine generator is overhauled about every eight years.
