Elwood Middle School Gains National Recognition

ELWOOD, NY — Elwood Middle School was named a "School to Watch" by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform, the Elwood School District announced.

Elwood is one of two middle schools in New York to receive the initial designation this year and only one of 38 middle schools throughout the state (out of 600) to receive this recognition since the program was established.

“I commend the Elwood Middle School community for this recognition," Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said via news release. "It is a testament to the hard work of our entire staff, the dedication of our students and the ongoing support of our community. I am extremely proud that we are a model for other schools throughout our region, state and nation!”

Each year, the Schools to Watch program recognizes middle schools across the nation that demonstrate continuous improvement and excel in various areas.

The program examines four essential elements: academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational support.

To be selected, school administrators and staff must complete an application process demonstrating their school’s academic excellence, responsiveness to student needs and interests and commitment to helping students achieve success at high levels. During the school year, schools that meet the proper criteria receive visits from state leaders who interview administrators, teachers, students and parents, observe classes, review achievement data and more.

Applicants also need to provide an outline for continued improvements over the coming years in addition to proving successful programs and practices.

“This was an important element of our application,” said Elwood Middle School Principal Dr. Christina Moran. “It allowed us to examine what we’ve done successfully thus far and provide a roadmap for this continued trajectory moving forward.”

Representatives from Elwood Middle School are set to attend a special Schools to Watch forum in Washington, D.C. at the end of June.

“I am grateful to the entire Elwood Middle School community for this outstanding achievement,” Moran said. “Being named a national ‘School to Watch’ would not have been possible without the support and dedication of our entire school community. Your support, guidance and endless championing of middle school made this possible!”
