Elwood’s Volleyball-A-Thon Raises $3,000 For Sean Urda Fund

Hundreds of John Glenn students participated in 29 teams over the course of six hours, raising over $3,000 for charity.

ELWOOD, NY — Elwood-John H. Glenn High School held its annual Volleyball-a-Thon fundraiser on March 10, according to a news release from the school district.

Hundreds of John Glenn students participated in 29 teams for over six hours and raised more than $3,000 for charity. This year, the school’s student council chose to donate proceeds to the Sean Urda Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund, which honors the memory of John Glenn student Sean Urda.

The John Glenn PTSA donated both food and time to support the players, and more than 15 faculty members donated their time to supervise and referee the event.

Led by captain Jimmy Rourke, the Gold Diggers team – rounded out by Carmela Ciriello, Shannon
McGrath, Diana Muniz, Michael Polestino, and Malav Shah – won the competition.

“The event went off without a hitch,” said teacher Lisa Fusaro. “Our students had a fantastic time coming together as a community for the first time since lockdown, and since it was for such a great cause, the event was even more memorable."
