An Evening with MICHAEL LINDSAY-HOGG Acclaimed Music Video Pioneer and Film/Theater Director

Enjoy a rare and revealing conversation with celebrated director Michael Lindsay-Hogg  (Brideshead Revisited, The Beatles’ Let It Be, The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, Broadway’s Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Agnes of God). The son of Hollywood star Geraldine Fitzgerald (Wuthering Heights), Lindsay-Hogg will discuss and sign his recently published memoir, Luck and Circumstance.

This program will feature film clips and rarely-screened music videos highlighting his illustrious career, including his work with such musical greats as The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Elton John, and The Who. Film and video clips courtesy of Bill Shelley and the Bill Shelley Archives.

Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s father, an English baronet, lived in Ireland and was rarely seen by his son. His stepfather was the scion of the Isidor Straus fortune, co-owner of R. H. Macy’s, and his mother, Geraldine Fitzgerald, was the glamorous Hollywood star who won instant acclaim as Bette Davis’s best friend in Dark Victory and in William Wyler’sWuthering Heights. Lindsay-Hogg writes of encountering as a boy the likes of Marion Davies and William Randolph Hearst, playing hide-and-seek with Olivia de Havilland, serving drinks to Humphrey Bogart, discussing life with Henry Miller. At the book’s center is an offhand comment made to him by his mother, when he was sixteen, about a rumour that she had had a romance with Orson Welles and that Welles was Michael’s father. “It’s not true,” she said. But for Lindsay-Hogg, it opened up a whole new realm of his life. Was his father the patron saint of American pictures, Orson Welles, or was he the man who considered himself Michael’s real father? As Lindsay-Hogg struggled to make sense of it all, questions of missed chances and conversations never had took root and shaped his life, questions that haunt and inform his moving and illuminating memoir.
