Hundreds are expected to gather for the 6th annual leg lamp lighting ceremony at at 7 p.m. on Nov. 26. The fish-netted gam will be lit in the store's front window in homage to the 1983 movie, "A Christmas Story," in what has become Northport's own unique way of ushering in the official start of the holiday season.
Billy and Jimmy Reichert, owners of Northport Hardware, found the lamp while cleaning out the store's basement in 2005, rustled up a few patrons from to watch an impromptu lighting ceremony, and a Northport tradition was born.
The 2010 Leg-Lamp Lighting Saturday was complete with what Mayor George Doll called the Northport Hardware Store Bagpipers Band, the Tigerettes, a man-made snowstorm, and a large pink bunny, actually Northport electrician Bobby Cross. This year, the bagpipers will play at 6:30 p.m. Expect this year to be even better!
