Northport Public Library Museum Cove Exhibit

The Railroad Museum of Long Island visits
The Museum Cove at Northport Public Library

The Railroad Museum of Long Island has given the Northport-East Northport Public Library an opportunity to exhibit some of its materials in our own Museum Cove.  Come ride the rails in the Northport Library’s Museum Cove between January and May. Explore the room, enhance your train knowledge, participate in a program, check out some train books, or just enjoy the journey.

Various programs along with a colorful display will help patrons develop an understanding of Long Island’s fascinating railroad past and excite families to learn more.

The Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI) is a New York State chartered not-for-profit museum whose mission is to preserve and present the history of railroading on Long Island and its importance to the development and prosperity of our communities.

Established at Greenport, New York in 1990, RMLI quickly obtained the assets of the defunct “Engine 39 Restoration Project.” Those assets included the Long Island Railroad G5s steam locomotive “Engine 39,” restoration shops and equipment at Riverhead, as well as a variety of retired Long Island Railroad rolling stock.

The Museum is staffed entirely by community volunteers with
funds being raised from admissions, membership dues, grants,
and donations.

The RMLI is open to the public at Greenport and Riverhead on Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. Additionally, the Riverhead site is open to the public on Saturdays beginning the week following Easter through the week prior to Thanksgiving each year. Children and adults alike are invited to step back in history at the Museum.
