St. Paul’s in Northport to House LI's First Winter Farmers Market of 2011

G&G Farmers Market, Inc. Signs Contract with Methodist Church on Main Street

Bi-Weekly Indoor Market Begins January 15, 2011

What would farmers bring to market in the dead of winter?  Area residents can soon find out when Long Island's first winter farmers market of 2011 opens on Saturday, January 15, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Northport.  Some 15 vendors associated with G&G Farmers Market of Long Island will bring fresh, natural and locally sourced food every other week throughout the winter and early spring.  Alternate Saturdays will be at Sweet Hollow Hall in Huntington/Melville.

"Providing a home to the winter farmers market is in keeping with our goal of further opening our doors to the community," said St. Paul's pastor Kristina Hansen.  "We are pleased to partner with G&G and to support their vision of healthy living, both physically and spiritually."

Jaime Greci, of G&G, stressed the opportunity the arrangement will offer for meeting and interacting with neighbors while stocking up on the kind of healthy food that is in increasing demand.

"We are committed to providing a safe and friendly environment that will benefit both the farmers and their customers," Greci said.  "It will be a healthy experience all around, with activities for kids and live entertainment, as well as delicious organic and natural food."

As an example of the kind of vendor the market will feature, Greci cited Mostly Myrtle's.  The family business specializes in its original "biskooky," a cross between a cookie and a biscotti.  The recipe – all natural, and free of any trans fats and preservatives – is inspired by Myrtle, the late grandmother of owner Debra Sadowsky, who operates the business with her daughter, Rachel.  Other vendors will include The Tea Plant, Inc.; Migliorelli Farms, which produces fruits and vegetables; Horman’s Best Pickles; All You Knead Artisan Bakery; and Naturally Handmade by Susan, offering soaps.

G&G Farmers Market will set up at St. Paul's, located at 270 Main Street in Northport, every other Saturday, beginning January 15, 2010, and running through April.  For more information, contact the church office at 631-261-0804.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church is Northport’s oldest continuously worshiping congregation.  The church building serves as home to various community groups, including the Northport Jazz Group, Boy Scout Troup 410, Singles Circle, Northport Opera, Northport Reader's Theater and One-Act Play Festival, and Alcoholics Anonymous.  Sunday worship and Church School begin at 10 a.m., with nursery provided.  All are welcome.
