60 Firefighters Battle Blaze at Cemetery

EAST NORTHPORT, NY - A fire was reported at the grounds of an East Northport cemetery over the weekend.

The East Northport Fire Department responded to a building fire on the grounds of Genola Cemetery on Laurel Road on Saturday at about 1:30 pm.

First arriving firefighters found a fully involved fire in a one-story maintenance building, and began an aggressive attack on the fire.

Sixty firefighters using eight trucks had the blaze under control within 40 minutes under the direction of Assistant Chiefs Tom Bourne and Steve Macedonio.

Crews were operating on the scene for about two hours.

The fire appears to be accidental in origin, and is under investigation by the Town of Huntington Fire Marshal. No injuries were reported.

The Northport and Greenlawn Fire Departments also responded to the scene to provide assistance.

In addition, Cyanide Response Team Paramedics from the Dix Hills Fire Department, Greenlawn Fire Department and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps were also dispatched to the scene. The Commack Fire Department and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps provided standby coverage during the alarm.
