Fishermen Rescued After Getting Caught In Current

The two men were fishing off the jetty when they went into the water and became caught in an outgoing tidal current on Thursday afternoon.

FORT SALONGA, NY - Two fisherman were rescued after getting caught in a current in the Long Island Sound on Thursday afternoon, according to Suffolk Police.

Carlos Jeronimo, 26, and Wilfredo Belc, 27, both of Queens, were fishing off of a jetty at Crab Meadow Beach in For Salonga, when they went into the water and became caught in an outgoing tidal current that pulled them away from shore.

A witness called 911 at 2:35 p.m. and Marine Bureau officers Keith Walters and Cory Kim responded and rescued the two men who were 300 yards from shore.

The officers were assisted by Suffolk Police officers Tyler Burt, Daniel Denig, Brian McVeigh and Paul Wiebke, who helped guide the Marine Bureau officers to the two men.

Both men were transported by Northport Fire Department to Huntington Hospital.
