NORTHPORT, NY — Flounder, 10-year-old female cat, is the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cat of the Week. Flounder has a sad backstory, said Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue.

Wild asked people to put themselves in Flounder's paws.

"Imagine you spent the first two years of your life in a warm and safe environment. Then your family moves, and for whatever reason, leaves you behind and you find yourself outside, alone and trying to learn how to take care of yourself. Neighbors looked out for you by putting some food out here and there. You found shelter sometimes under a car or a tree. No one talked to you. Most days were scary and because of that, you never left the area that you were familiar with, even if it was not the kindest to you. Imagine all of this for EIGHT long years."

That was Flounder's life. A concerned neighbor reached out to the cat rescue after seeing "terrible matting" on her fur, and Flounder found herself in caring arms. Her fur was taken care of.

"She looks to be cross eyed, but she is not; it just adds to her charm," Wild said. "She has half a tail, too. What happened to her we will never truly know."

She went into foster care and her personality arrived.

"The personality that had been lost for eight long years," Wild said. "When she gets excited her tail shakes like a rattlesnake. Once comfortable, she is very affectionate. She holds your hand, and if you move, she will grab you to keep you there. She is shy but likes to be nearby when you sleep. She loves to be in a window in the morning for her sun bath, safe inside looking out at all that used to scare her with relief and gratefulness."

She is 10, but she is strong, Wild said.

"We know she has many more years left in her and want to see her in a home so loving she will never remember those lonely years again. Flounder will simply melt your heart. Please help us find this amazing, girl who kept going everyday dreaming of her forever home, her happily ever after."
