Forget the Sand and Raise the Road

Asharoken Avenue doesn't need sand, it needs cement columns.

Why do all the Newsday articles on Asharoken's sand replenishment have the same "Dune restoration is a public safety issue" comment in them? (page A13 1/11/2017). Does anyone working for Newsday live on the north side of Asharoken Avenue?

Seems the story goes that we will need to put down sand to protect all the possibly stranded people in Eaton's Neck when the road is washed out. It couldn't possibly be that we need to help maintain the property values of the north side of Asharoken Avenue homeowner's?

Anyone who has ever driven to Key West, FL knows you do not need sand for a road to be passable over a body of water. One section goes for 7 miles between islands with no sand for support.

I propose that before the story of the "Public Necessity" of sand replenishment be cemented into the public consciousness, we consider any federal funds be utilized to raise the road and thereby protect Eaton's Neck without benefiting Sound Front property owner's at the public's behest. These homeowners’ have every right to reject the public funds that come with such a heavy price. Just please don't tell me it is in our interest to maintain their property's value by utilizing a much less permanent solution to this "Public Safety Issue". Any sand that is replenished will need to be replenished again and much sooner than the road needing refurbishing. Do the math and what is right for all resident’s not just a select few.
