Intoxicated Motorcyclist Involved In Crash: Northport Police
A witness called him "a madman on a motorcycle with no helmet." The man was severely impaired, registering a 0.26 BAC reading, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — A motorcyclist was arrested Monday morning in Northport after he was involved in a crash while driving intoxicated, Northport police said.
Steven Millar, 33, of Brooklyn, was driving his motorcycle on Fort Salonga Road without a helmet just before 11:32 a.m., police said. Millar told police an unknown car cut in front of him, causing him to drop his motorcycle. He only handed over a surrendered New York State license, police said.
Millar was unsteady on his feet, had slow slurred speech, glossy bloodshot eyes and his breath reeked of alcohol, police said. He then did poorly on several field sobriety tests, police said.

Police then tested Millar's breath, which resulted in a BAC reading of 0.26 percent. Lifeloc Technologies, a company that sells breathalyzers and drunk goggles, describes a 0.25 BAC as "all mental, physical and sensory functions are severely impaired. Near total loss of motor function control."
Millar was arrested and transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for medical treatment. Millar was then found to have been carrying white powder that tested positive for cocaine, police said.

Millar was charged with a DWI, DWI: BAC reading, operation of motor vehicle by unlicensed driver, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and equipment: motorcycle/helmet. He was released on an appearance ticket for Aug. 19 at 7 p.m.
Laura Nelson, a witness, said she was the one who called 911. She told Patch Millar cut her off near Batata Cafe, located at 847 Fort Salonga Road. She said no one cut Millar off, and no other cars were involved in any accident.
"He cut me off, hit the curb in front of TD Bank (647 Main St.) and went flying over his bike," Nelson said.
She said she watched the bike continue several yards before hitting a parked white vehicle in front of Pumpernickel's at 640 Main St.
Susan Ryan, another witness, told Patch that Millar was driving along Fort Salonga Road between 70 and 80 miles per hour.
"He was a madman on a motorcycle with no helmet and driving in and out of cars," she said. "The way he was driving was like he was a race car driver. He was so precise in his driving skills, it was like he had just come off a racetrack and is used to driving this way. He was swerving in and out as he was looking around."
Ryan said she confronted Millar moments later.
She told him: "'You just scared the hell out of me and many other drivers along 25A driving like a complete lunatic. Why were you driving in and out of cars and into oncoming traffic without a helmet? You're lucky to be alive.' And he says, 'You're lucky to be alive.'"
