More than 60 boys and girls from our area turned out to compete at the 2015 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship in East Northport. Nine of them were crowned local champions in their age groups and have earned the right to compete at the district level. The Fr. Thomas A. Judge K of C Council 6893 sponsored the local competition at Trinity Regional School last Monday, January 12th. All youngsters ages 9 to 14 were eligible to participate.
In the 9 year-old bracket, Victoria Sheluck was the girls’ champion and Michael Lombardo was the boys’ division champ. Taylor Brech was the 10 year-old girls’ champion and Nicholas Fuggini was the winner of the 10 year-old boys’ division. In the 11 year-olds’ bracket, Molly Miller was the girls’ champion and Brandon Browne was the boys’ champion. The twelve year-old girls’ division winner was Madison Mullman and the boys’ winner was Daniel Brown. There was just one winner in the 13 year-old division (girls) which was won by Zoe Warren. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged.
Each of these winners will compete in the NY State 9th District competition to be held Tuesday, February 3, at Trinity Regional School, Fifth Avenue in East Northport, with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels. The NY State finals competition will be held at West Point Military Academy in April.
