"Let's Take a Veteran Sailing" Event July 21st

Northport Harbor, NY - Once again the Centerport Yacht Club (CYC) is proudly hosting SailAhead's 5th Annual "Let's Take a Veteran Sailing" event on Sunday, July 21st, 2019. Since its inception in 2014 this annual event has helped spread awareness of SailAhead's program to help veterans suffering from PTSD and to honor those who succumbed to this dreaded disease epidemic and their surviving family members. More than 140 veterans and family members, mostly from Long Island, will participate as guests on a fleet of at least 45 volunteer sailboats, skippers and crew.

Special SailAhead guests this year will be "Our Mates" and some of their families. "Our Mates" are the name tags of 219 veterans who have taken their lives because of PTSD or an inability to re-adapt to civilian life. As part of the welcoming ceremony SailAhead will honor the memory of these 219 veterans by having surviving family members present to make sure that they and their deceased loved ones are not forgotten.

The sailing event will last all afternoon; the flotilla will sail together on the Long Island Sound, a helicopter will fly through the fleet to take photos and video. SailAhead is a 501c (3) not for profit organization, launched by the Duclay family in the winter of 2013. SailAhead has dedicated itself to helping wounded veterans using sailing as a form of therapy.
