NORTHPORT, NY — Lizzie, a 3-year-old female feline, is the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cat of the Week.

She is brave and sweet, said Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue.

"We were all worried…what are we going to do about our Lizzie?" Wild said.

Lizzie came to the shelter from a sanctuary in Texas back in September 2022 at around 2 years old. The sanctuary needed help placing some of its residents, according to Wild. Lizzie came with three of her friends, Herbie, Hazel and Jet.

"All were friendly and were adopted by amazing families quickly," Wild said. "Lizzie was scared and was so shy. She could not be picked up or pet either. Thankfully, a new foster named Danielle signed up with our rescue. Lizzie was making baby steps and Danielle gave frequent updates, and always remained positive, even when I must admit, I was starting to worry. Danielle was still unable to pet Lizzie. With a leap of Faith, Danielle decided to let Lizzie out into general population….to roam her home with her other cats and see what could happen."

Lizzie watched Danielle pet her new friends and decided she wanted to try out "human interaction" that the other cats seemed to love so much, Wild said.

"For the first time in eight months, Lizzie allowed Danielle to pet her. It didn’t stop there," Wild said. "Danielle’s daughter was petting her. Next her husband. Lizzie was asking for belly rubs. Purring, relaxing, seeking play time and affection."

She is now ready, Wild said.

"Lizzie has taught us all that being brave is not when you do not feel afraid, but rather it is when you conquer that fear," Wild said. "She never gave up. Each day she gave us a little bit more of herself. What an amazing and miraculous journey that started hundreds of miles away."

Lizzie needs a patient family that will give her the time to trust, Wild said. She also needs a cat sibling or siblings, as she loves other cats. And definitely a window to sit in because she will look out the window meowing away, according to Wild.

"She has the sweetest voice and will chat with you all day long and will never stop amazing you with her progress. You will not regret giving her the happily ever after she so deserves."

Lizzie is spayed, has all her shots, is litter box-trained, and micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative.
