Lucy And Percy Lost Their Home — They’re Still Waiting Together: Northport Kitties Of The Week

COMMACK, NY — Lucy and Percy have spent their entire lives together.

The 5½-year-old bonded siblings were once tiny kittens curled up behind a garbage dump with nothing but each other for warmth and comfort. Years later, after losing the home they had come to know, they are once again waiting side by side for someone to choose them.

Lucy and Percy are Northport Cat Rescue Association’s Bonded Siblings of the Week.

“They’ve been waiting for someone to really see them,” the rescue said. “Not just glance through the glass. Not stop for a moment and say, ‘Aww, they’re cute.’ Not walk past because they aren’t tiny kittens. Really see them.”

The pair was found as infants behind a garbage dump, curled up together for warmth, safety and comfort, according to NCRA.

“Think about that for a moment,” the rescue said. “Two tiny babies with nothing in the world except each other.”

Lucy and Percy survived those frightening early days together and eventually learned what it meant to be safe.

They learned what a home felt like and what it was like to have a family, the rescue said.

Then their world changed again.

When their family had to move to care for an ill relative, Lucy and Percy were surrendered.

“They lost their home,” NCRA said. “They lost the life they knew. But just like when they were tiny babies behind that garbage dump, there was one thing they didn’t lose: each other.”

Lucy is described as the sweetheart of the pair.

She is affectionate, enjoys being petted and held, and is what the rescue calls a “little couch potato.”

“She is the kind of cat who seems to understand just how wonderful it is to be loved,” NCRA said.

Percy is her playful brother and “resident instigator.”

He has a small squeak of a meow and a personality that can make people smile when they least expect it, the rescue said.

“They are loving,” NCRA said. “They are gentle. They are ready for a home. But they are still waiting.”

The rescue believes their age may be making the wait longer.

People understandably fall in love with kittens, NCRA said. But while families come and go looking for younger cats, Lucy and Percy continue waiting.

Unlike kittens, the pair already knows what it is like to live in a home and how deeply they can bond with a family.

“And you can’t help but wonder: How many times should two little souls have to start over?” the rescue said.

Lucy and Percy survived their earliest days together. They grew up together. They had a home together. And they lost that home together.

Northport Cat Rescue Association has made them one important promise: they will leave together.

“They aren’t asking for much,” the rescue said. “A couch to curl up on. A sunny window. A few toys. Someone to love them.”

Most importantly, volunteers want Lucy and Percy to have the security of knowing that when they begin trusting again, they are finally home for good.

The pair is currently waiting at Petco Commack.

NCRA is asking visitors not to simply walk past their enclosure.

“Stop,” the rescue said. “Say hello. Look at them. Really look at them.”

Volunteers believe the right person or family is out there — someone who will look at both cats and decide they do not have to wait anymore.

Until then, Lucy and Percy will continue doing what they have done their entire lives.

They will wait together.

Lucy and Percy are spayed and neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, litter box trained and have tested negative for both FeLV and FIV.
