Man Dies After Car Strikes Tree

A man died after his car struck a tree on Long Island Wednesday afternoon, police say.

CENTERPORT, NY – A 60-year-old man died after his car struck a tree in Centerport Wednesday afternoon, police said.

According to Suffolk Police, William Hunter was driving a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta west on Fort Salonga Road at Stony Hollow Road when his vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree around noon.

Hunter, 60, of Centerport, was transported by the Centerport Fire Department to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.

Under the direction of Centerport First Department First Assistant Chief Richard Miltner, an ambulance, engine, heavy rescue truck and paramedic unit were dispatched to the scene. Northport Village Police were also on the scene.
