Man Drove Drunk With Infant Daughter In Car In Suffolk: Police

The man crashed his car while his 11-month-old daughter was in it, police say.

EAST NORTHPORT, NY — An East Northport man was charged with DWI under Leandra's Law after he drove while drunk with his 11-month-old daughter in the car, Suffolk police said.

Matthew Gibney, 33, was driving a 2021 Hyundai when he hit the back of a 2020 Mazda on Elwood Road, at the intersection of Pulaski Road, at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, police said. Gibney was intoxicated, police said.

The Northport Fire Department brought the infant to Huntington Hospital for evaluation.

Gibney and the driver of the Mazda, a 22-year-old Yonkers woman, were not injured, police said.

Gibney was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger (Leandra’s Law) and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was held overnight at the Second Precinct and scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.

The Hyundai was impounded for a safety check. Detectives asked anyone with information on the crash to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
