East Northport resident and running star Mikey Brannigan was recently selected by U.S. Paralympics Track and Field as the 2015 Male Track Athlete of the Year.

Brannigan, who has autism, had a stellar summer track season after graduating from Northport High School in June. He won gold in his first international meet at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto and won his first U.S. Paralympics Track and Field national title by running 1,500 meters in a time of 3:48.85, setting a new T20 Paralympic world record in the process.

Brannigan, 18, has been making headlines for his running accomplishments as a Northport Tiger for a few years now. He will continue his running career as a member of the New York Athletic Club.

More on Brannigan:

U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee, selected 66 athletes as 2015 U.S. Paralympics Track and Field High School All-Americans. This is the sixth year that U.S. Paralympics has honored the top high school track and field athletes with Paralympic-eligible impairments.

In addition to being named Male Track Athlete of the Year, he was also awarded All-American status in the 1,500 meter and 5,000 meter events.

“Each year, the high school All-American list showcases the top young athletes across the country,” Cathy Sellers, high performance director of U.S. Paralympics Track and Field, said in a statement. “This group has a number of athletes that we will see on the podium at the 2020 Paralympic Games and potentially even in 2016.”
