Nearly $100K Raised Against Cancer At Northport Relay For Life
Students and other community members took turns walking the track for 12 hours as Northport-East Northport raised money to fight cancer.
NORTHPORT, NY — The Northport-East Northport community raised approximately $100,000 at its Relay for Life event, the school district announced. The community's original goal was half that.
Students and community members raised more than $96,000 for the fight against cancer. With the total amount raised still being finalized, the district anticipates it will exceed $100,000.
"The incredible success of the event is due to the many donations of community members and the district is incredibly thankful for the support," the district wrote.

A 12-hour event was held, attracting students from all schools in the district. Activities ranged from live band performances and a DJ to inflatable games and miniature golf. Participants spending the night also enjoyed a midnight movie and late-night snacks.
Northport High School coach, speaker and cancer survivor Rich Castellano addressed the crowd
during the opening ceremonies, as well as fellow NHS teacher Bryan Krahel and his wife, Alexandra Krahel.

Attendees also enjoyed a performance by the NHS Tiger Marching Band, Flagline and Tigerettes.
Northport High School teacher Bill Slagle was awarded the "Hometown Hero Award" by the American Cancer Society.
David Scott, a fellow teacher and coordinator of the Relay for Life event, lauded Slagle.
"As a teacher and cancer survivor, Bill has worked tirelessly to support the mission of the American Cancer Society," Scott said. "It is a well-deserved recognition for a great teacher and community advocate."
