Northport Apartment Catches Fire

NORTHPORT, NY — Three fire departments battled a Northport apartment blaze on Saturday morning.

Northport police and firefighters were called to Main Street around 8:20 a.m. Saturday and were met with heavy smoke. All occupants of the home made it outside by the time officials arrived.

A woman told police she saw a haze lingering in the air and flames coming from her bedroom closet. She said she had an antique light that may have been on in the closet, police said.

Firefighters from Northport, East Northport and Centerport responded. One firefighter was taken to Huntington Hospital for possible smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.

The fire had extended to the attic and apartment above, Northport Fire Dept. Hook & Ladder Co. 1 wrote on Facebook. The fire was extinguished.

"Nice job by all involved!" the department wrote.

Suffolk County Fire Rescue Services and the American Red Cross went to help with any re-homing needs, as two apartments were condemned by the Village Fire Marshall, police said.
